In recent years, slim cans have become the dominant format in Iceland’s soft drink market. Known as “sleek” cans, they are narrower and taller than the cans that were previously most common and are still used for most beer brands.

Recently, however, several Icelandic soft drink brands have attracted attention after reappearing in the traditional can format. These include Appelsín, Kristall and Pepsi Max, all produced by Ölgerðin. Elísabet Austmann of Ölgerðin told mbl.is that the reason for the change is not dissatisfaction with sleek cans, but rather that the company has been unable to secure sufficient quantities from its overseas supplier.

“Although all kinds of nostalgia are very much in fashion these days, unfortunately this change has nothing to do with that. Due to limited availability of sleek cans this summer, our suppliers have been unable to keep up with the strong growth in canned sales of our most popular products,” says Elísabet.
